We welcome all nationalities! If a visa is required for your ship assignment, we’ll guide you through the process once you receive a job offer.

02. Cruise Industry: What to expect
HOW LONG ARE CONTRACTS ONBOARD?
Most contracts range from 4 to 6 months, depending on the cruise line and position. A minimum commitment of four months is generally required. Keep in mind that contracts run continuously without scheduled vacations or breaks. If you enjoy your experience onboard, extensions are often available, giving you the flexibility to continue working if you choose.
HOW MUCH TIME DO I HAVE BETWEEN GETTING A CONTRACT OFFER AND BOARDING THE SHIP?
It varies, but we aim to give you at least two months to sort out everything before you embark. That said, last-minute openings do come up, so if you’re flexible, we might reach out sooner for an exciting opportunity!
CAN I BRING MY MUSICAL EQUIPMENT?
Yes, musicians are generally expected to bring their own instruments and essential accessories. Here’s a quick guide based on instrument type:
Guitarists:
Bring at least one guitar, a pedalboard, and XLR cables. No need for an amp.
Bassists:
Bring your bass and at least one XLR cable—no amp needed.
Sax Players:
Most cruise lines require at least one saxophone, a flute, and a clarinet. Trumpet and trombone players only need their respective instruments.
Drummers:
Drum kits are provided, but you should bring your own cymbals, hi-hat clutch, sticks, mallets, rods, brushes, and personal accessories.
Pianists and Vocalists:
No personal equipment is required, but if you prefer your own keyboard or microphone, you’re welcome to bring them.
Metronome:
Highly recommended for practice
Note: Equipment requirements may vary slightly depending on the cruise line. If you have any questions about what to bring, feel free to ask!
DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR MY FLIGHTS AND HOTELS?
No! The cruise line fully covers your flights and transportation to and from the ship. If an overnight hotel stay is needed during your transit, the cruise line will also arrange and pay for it. Your return flight home after your contract is also included, so you can focus on your music without worrying about travel expenses.
03. Job Matters
HOW MANY HOURS WILL I WORK PER DAY?
Musicians on cruise ships typically perform between 3 to 5 hours per day, though this can vary depending on the ship’s itinerary, audience, and the cruise line’s specific policies.
Regarding time off, some cruise lines offer one day off weekly or biweekly, while others may not. It’s best to clarify your specific schedule during the hiring process so you know what to expect.
WILL I HAVE OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES BESIDES PERFORMING?
Yes, but they are minimal and primarily safety-related.
The most common mandatory duty is the safety drill, which takes place at the start of each cruise. During this short drill (around 30 minutes), all crew members assist guests in learning emergency procedures. As a musician, your role will likely involve guiding guests to designated assembly areas and ensuring they follow instructions.
Some cruise lines also conduct crew-only safety drills, where musicians and other staff practice emergency protocols. The frequency of these drills varies by cruise line.
Aside from safety duties, additional responsibilities depend on the cruise line:
- Some may ask musicians to assist guests during embarkation or debarkation.
- Others have no additional duties beyond performing.
- On European River Cruises, musicians can choose to assist other departments in exchange for extra tips at the end of the month.
WHO WILL BE MY SUPERVISOR ONBOARD?
Your direct supervisor onboard will be the Musical Director (MD). They oversee all musical performances on the ship and will be your main point of contact for:
- Scheduling performances
- Equipment needs
- Rehearsals
- Guest interactions
- Ship policies & regulations
If you’re part of the Showband, the MD will also act as your band leader.
The MD will inform you about safety trainings, department meetings, and other important onboard procedures. If you ever have questions, concerns, or challenges while working onboard, you can always reach out to the Musical Director.
Additionally, Studio 16 Entertainment remains available to support you throughout your contract. If any issue arises that requires external assistance, we will step in to ensure everything runs smoothly for you.
Our goal is to provide a seamless and rewarding experience for our musicians, both on and off the stage.
04. Perks of working onboard
CAN I EXPLORE PORTS DURING STOPS?
Absolutely! You’ll generally have the freedom to disembark when the ship is in port, giving you the chance to explore. While there may be occasional rehearsals or performances that require you to return early, it’s rare. The only exception is “port manning,” where a few crew members must stay on board, but this only happens a few times during your contract. Most of the time, you’ll have the freedom to enjoy your time ashore.
IS FOOD AND ACCOMMODATION PROVIDED?
Yes! Your accommodation is fully covered as part of your contract. Food is also free, and musicians have access to some guest-area restaurants that may require a small fee if you choose to dine there.
CAN I ACCESS GUEST AREAS?
Yes! As a musician, you have access to most of the ship’s lounges and areas, as long as you’re dressed appropriately. The main exception is private guest cabins, which are strictly off-limits, and there may be specific crew restrictions on certain areas like the guest gym or buffet. But overall, you can move around the ship freely.
WHAT CAN I DO ON MY DAYS OFF?
You’ll have plenty of options! Whether you prefer to practice music, work out at the gym, soak up the sun with a good book, or binge-watch movies, your days off are yours to enjoy. You can also take advantage of crew training opportunities like learning a new language. It’s all about balancing relaxation with personal growth and fun!
CAN I SAVE ALL THE MONEY AS THEY SAY?
Actually, yes. Your accommodation, meals, water, electricity, and other essentials are all covered, so you can save most of your salary. Of course, how much you save depends on the activities you choose to do or things you want to buy onboard. We recommend finding a good balance between enjoying the cruise lifestyle and saving. Major expenses won’t be an issue, apart from personal toiletries and Wi-Fi. It’s all up to you!
05. Salaries
WHAT ABOUT THE AVERAGE SALARY?
Salaries in the cruise industry vary based on factors like the cruise line, your role, the instrument you play, and how long you’ve been with the line. While we don’t control salary rates (they are determined by the cruise line), here’s a general idea:
- Showband and lounge band musicians typically earn between $2,400 to $3,400 per month.
- Soloists can earn around $2,800 to $3,800 per month or more, depending on experience and performance.
These are just estimates—actual pay may vary.
WHEN AND HOW WILL I GET MY SALARY?
Your salary will be paid regularly, typically either bi-weekly or monthly. Payments are usually made directly deposited into your ship-specific account.
There are ATMs available onboard that allow you to withdraw cash from your account, ensuring that you have easy access to your funds while at sea. You’ll also have access to an online platform to manage and transfer money effortlessly.
For certain positions, payments will be made from us on a monthly basis to your chosen account.
Most cruise lines pay in U.S. dollars or € Euros, ensuring consistent and standardized compensation across the board.
DO I HAVE TO PAY TAXES ON MY WAGES?
U.S. citizens will pay federal taxes but are exempt from state taxes while working at sea. For everyone else, tax obligations depend on your home country—you’ll need to check your personal situation in your country.
DO I NEED TO BRING MONEY?
We recommend bringing at least $200 in cash and, if possible, a major credit card. This will cover any personal expenses until you receive your first paycheck and can be handy for any unexpected situations.
